Christian Credit Counseling
Christian Credit Counseling sounds
like an answer to a prayer and you want to believe that
they will help you get a handle on all those debts that
you just can’t keep up with...
There are times
when life is so overwhelming that you are reaching out for help
and would like to believe that there is a Power greater than
yourself who actually cares about your problems. When financial
crises strike it is not uncommon to seek guidance from a
community of believers because you have nowhere else to place
your trust.
Christian Credit
Counseling sounds like an answer to a prayer and you want to
believe that they will help you get a handle on all those debts
that you just can’t keep up with. You are tired of being broke
and harassed by creditors and you just want some peace of
mind.
Unfortunately, some
of us find out the hard way that not all counseling agencies
that promote themselves as being “Christian” are what they seem
to be. There are unscrupulous businessmen and women out there
who make a fortune preying on the misfortunes of others and it
is not beyond them to lay claims to being a believer like
yourself.
Even when you find
a credit counseling service that is promoted as being
Christian, make sure that you investigate very thoroughly
whether or not they can pass some basic “tests” before you
enlist their services.
The very first
thing you should understand is that credit counseling should be
free. Other services might have fees attached to them, such as
debt settlement or debt negotiation, but counseling by
reputable companies should be free of charge. If a company,
Christian or otherwise, tries to charge you an upfront fee for
counseling services this should immediately raise a red
flag.
Next you will want
to do an online search to see if the company you are
considering is listed with the Better Business Bureau and if
they have had any negative feedback from the community. If they
claim to be Christian owned and operated and are really running
a scam, chances are they have been reported by other consumers
who fell victim to their schemes.
It is also in your
best interest to question what services they have available and
what fees are attached to those services. In the past there
were social service agencies that were set up specifically to
counsel, but those agencies are quickly becoming
extinct.
A whole new breed
of credit counseling agencies have cropped up since the new
Bankruptcy laws went into effect in 2005 that mandate consumers
seek counseling prior to filing bankruptcy. Now so-called
credit counseling agencies are coming out of the woodwork and
many of them are anything but reputable.
Although you may be
suffering financial hardships at the moment, an ethical credit
counseling organization can help you on the road to
recovery.
Christian Credit
Counseling agencies do exist, but just because they promote
themselves as Christian doesn’t mean that they are. There are
online credit counseling reviews that you could also
investigate that compare agencies and services
offered.
Just make sure that
you know what you are getting into before you trust anyone with
your financial affairs. You are already experiencing
difficulties, you don’t want to make things
worse.
